This charming wood carving shows Lord Hanuman with a sindoori-colored face. This color is popular with his devotees who smear him with a rich red-vermilion (sindoor) paste while worshipping him. He has a gentle, adorable expression on his face, as if telling his devotees, ‘Do not worry, I am here to protect you’.

This emotion is further magnified in the posture made by his raised right hand, that of granting ‘Abhaya’ (fearlessness) to his devotees. At the same time the left hand lightly supports his inclined nada (mace) facing downwards. The latter posture again emphasises Hanuman ji’s totally non-aggressive demeanour in this sculpture.

Hanuman here wears a Vaishnava tilak, symbolising that he is a devoted Bhakta of Bhagawan Rama, an avatar of Vishnu ji. He wears here an open garland in the South Indian style. His tail rises up behind him to frame his halo.

Hanuman stands on a plinth-like lotus pedestal from which arise two wide pillars which eventually support the elaborate Prabhavali framing his body. The whole structure is topped by a superbly carved auspicious Kirtimukha.

There is a remarkable and soothing balance in the composition. This has been achieved not only through the modelling which shows the hands of a master craftsman but also through the exceptional colour combination with the sculpture majorly being composed of orange (sindoori), white, golden and silver hues, working in remarkable balance with each other giving the whole composition a very attractive and sophisticated look.

This sculpture was carved at Thammampatty in Tamil Nadu and the colouring was done at Jaipur.
