Siddhi Lakshmi Purna Chandi: Rare Goddess Large Wooden Statue

This large wooden Siddhi Lakshmi statue is based on the local representations of the goddess, where she is seen as a ten-armed celestial maiden, standing on the extended arms of her consort and another popular Nepalese-Hindu god, Bhairava, a form of Shiva. Within a lovely frame of vines that mimic fiery motifs carved on the woodwork stand Siddhi Lakshmi armed with various weapons in her multiple hands. In the lowermost section of this wooden Siddhi Lakshmi statue, lays a human male with ethnic features acting as the seat for the wrathful four-armed Bhairava. Adorned with a garland of human heads, a beaded necklace, a serpent around his neck, large round earrings and a distinctively Nepalese- crown, Bhairava’s presence in this wood statue is impactful.

On Bhairava’s hands, Siddhi Lakshmi appears in a valiant posture, appearing to be steady yet lunging. Her five faces, delineated exquisitely to give them a tranquil allure are adorned with bejeweled crowns with skulls as embellishments. Human heads strung together in beads form the goddess’s garland, whose celestial form is beautified by the skirt and elaborate girdle of beads and bells over it. Both Purnachandi and Bhairava in this wooden Siddhi Lakshmi statue carry a skull cup in their right hand and have their left hand raised in the “Tarjani Mudra”- the gesture of indicating an error. On the reverse of the statue, a circular frame is cut for the devotee to fully view the fifth face of the great goddess. The ability of the craftsman to highlight every minute detail in this monotone wooden icon is worthy of appreciation.

Siddhi Lakshmi, Purna Chandi though a striking manifestation of the primeval mother goddess has only a few known appearances in the visual culture. “Siddha” in Sanskrit means accomplishment, which indicates that the composite incarnation of Parvati-Chandi-Lakshmi undoubtedly is revered for her benevolence as the provider of auspicious boons.
