Sri Ganesha with the regal glory that surrounds him is the embodiment of the ancient Indian idea of “Digvijaya” (one who is victorious in all directions). The first-worshipped (Prathama-Poojya) elephant-faced deity for his devotees is the Raja (king) of the Universe and what better medium to reveal his kingly aura than the mystical “Imperial Stone”- Jade? Immensely difficult to cut and carrying an otherworldly appeal, Jade and its indestructibility are a fitting representation of Vinayaka’s cosmic powers.

The mighty Lord of the Universe is evoked in innumerable ways across the world, the simplest method being meditating on the celestial image of Ganesha and mentally offering him a bunch of fragrant flowers- “Pushpanajali”. Appreciating the intricate foliage and floral adornment of this jade Sri Ganesha statue, one begins to feel as if the sculptor was engrossed in the Maanas-Pooja (mental worship) of the grandest Roopa of Sri Ganesha, wreathing him in sweet-scented flowers when the Lord of Wisdom (Buddhi) inspired him into sculpting this spellbinding artwork, nothing less than a Pushpanjali frozen in stone.

The natural green hue of Jade that infuses this momentous Ganesha statue with a divine exterior also makes it a potent and propitious representation of the Lord. According to Shastri and Vaastu rules, a green-colored icon of Ganesha when placed in your space is the bestower of immeasurable luxuries and attracts auspiciousness in one’s life. In this Jade Sri Ganesha murti, you not only get the textually prescribed favorable green tone but also the benefits of a Vama-Mukhi Ganesha (with his trunk turning to the left).

Icons of this kind known as “Vaastu-Ganesha” eradicate all Vaastu-Doshas of space and are thus highly sought after by people and organizations who aim at maintaining a constant flow of profit and accomplishments. Royally ornamented and attired, Sri Ganesha sits in “Maharajalilasana” (a regal posture) in his popular four-armed (Chatura-Bhuja) form. In three of his four arms, Ganapati carries three different flowers which are closely associated with him in Hindu religious and artistic traditions.

In his secondary left hand, the Jade Ganesha has Padma (pink lotus that blooms during the day) which symbolizes wisdom, wealth, and fertility. His secondary right hand holds a fully-blossomed Utapala or Nilabja (blue lily) whose open petals represent the rising sun, heralding of achievement of divine knowledge. Between his thumb and index finger joined to make the gesture of fearlessness or “Abhaya Mudra”, Ganesha carries a branch of the wish-fulfilling tree (Kalpa-Vriksha).

With the power of rewarding all human and spiritual desires in his hand, Ganesha is known as “Kalpa-Vallidhara” (carrier of the sprig of the wish-granting tree). A bowl of Modaka (sweets) in Ganapati’s left hand completes this four-armed Chavi (image) of the Lord which is adorned with the regal “Chattra” or umbrella made with fine vegetation patterns. Hidden behind Ganesha, on his left is a stylistically carved Mayura or peacock with beautifully presented feathers on the neck and a curving crown.

As per the Kreeda-Khanda of the Ganesha Purana, the Mayura, brother of Garuda was taken as a mount by Ganesha after he defeated the celestial bird in a battle. Becoming the Lord of Mayura- “Mayureshwara”, Sri Ganesha also declared his victory over pride which is embodied by the enchanting feathered being. Among other secondary characters on the ornate platform of this Jade Ganesha murti are two miniature Mushaka (rats) on each side of his throne and his wives- Siddhi and Buddhi, on individual lotus pedestals. Surrounded by plush foliage and his household, Ganesha surpasses the glory of a sovereign enthroned in his royal court.

The rectangular platform that acts as the base for this Jade Sri Ganesha idol is in itself a marvelous work of art. With tiny flowers etched in the stone and natural motifs outlining it, the plinth showcases four miniature Ganesha images- two in the sitting posture and two standing, a female elephant with her child dotingly standing between her legs, and a “Purnaghata”, the vase of plenty as the central motif. The presence of Ganesha and the vase as well as the maternal quality infused by the mother-child elephant pair makes the platform a highly deific part of the composition.

On the reverse of this Jade icon are lyrically engraved networks of creepers and bunches of fully blossomed lotuses that seem to be emerging from some unknown point, unrestrainedly. It is through a focused work by the sculptor, patiently moving the point of his chisel on the hard stone, infusing it with a natural flow of life that a flawless balance is brought in this spellbinding murti of Ganesha who reigns over the universe and its infinite wisdom.
