Radha, Radhika, Radhe- the beloved of Sri Krishna has many names, but for her devotees, she is the supreme ruler of Krishna’s heart and Vrindavan- Radha Rani (queen Radha). Jiva Goswami, an ardent Vaishnava philosopher has beautifully penned the story of Radha’s coronation as the queen of Vrindavan, in his writing- Madhava Mahotsava.
Radha, who is the most exquisite of all the sakhis (friends) of Krishna, was often agitated by Krishna’s engagements with the other ladies of the village. To assure Radha of her position as the foremost companion of Krishna, goddess Paurnamasi (a form of Yogamaya, Vishnu’s yogic energy) organized a ceremony, to which all the divinities were invited. Great goddesses like Durga, Yamuna, Ganga, and the sun god’s wives- Sanjana and Chaya blessed Radha by sprinkling flowers on her. Goddess Saraswati handed over a basket containing a celestial royal crest to Radha, declaring her worthy of being deified. After bathing in holy waters, dressed in fineries, Radha appeared in her royal assembly, where she was declared the sovereign queen of Vrindavan. Placed on a lotus platform, a divine smile spread across her face, this brass idol of Radha Ji is a representation of her as Radha Rani. Her ornamentation, highlighted by the beautiful inlay work, her graceful posture, and her imposing crown, all speak for the might of Sri Radha. The visual rhythm created by red, green, and blue stones against the lustrous brass brings a distinctive vibrancy to the metal image. The golden gleam on her face, though an effect created by the glistening brass, appears to be emanating from within this exquisite idol.
