The legendary eleven-headed roopa of Bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara has been translated by the maker of this copper Phurba (ritual dagger) into his wrathful aspect as Mahakala, with all eleven heads radiating formidable energy. Placed on an exquisite double-layered lotus platform, the Phurba is empowered by the presence of Mahakala, who is a mighty protector in Tibetan Buddhism. Balancing the heads of Mahakala, the Phurba has four Makara mouths, from which the blade emerges, etched with intertwined serpent motifs, which symbolize the innate abilities of the human self.
