It is one among the six Great Indian Philosophies, the others being Sankhya, Nyaya, Vaisheshika, Purvamimamsa and Uttaramimamsa. Devised originally as a Moksha shastra Yoga later developed into a practical science for maintaining physical health and later into a therapeutic science. The International Day of Yoga is celebrated June 21 every year and now the whole world hails Yoga.
Ayurveda and Yoga are very closely related and in many yogic texts we can see the benefits explained with Ayurvedic terminologies like vata, pitta, kapha, dosha etc. Both are based on Dharma and seek Moksha as the final goal. Yoga purifies the body and mind.
I had the good fortune to go through the book titled The Basic Principles of Yoga, written by Dr. Kulratan Singh, Dr. Pavan Singh and Dr. Roma Anand and felt so happy that they have made the book holistically and classically. Rather than going for gimmicks. they have made an earnest attempt to depict various aspects of Yoga in such a manner that any BAMS student will enjoy learning theories with clarity and interest.
The 14 chapters of this book gives a proper Introduction followed by history of Yoga, Streams of Yoga, Yoga and Ayurveda, Pathyapathyas, Panchakosha theory, Development of Yoga, Asanas, Pranayama, Shatkarma, Dharana Dhyana and Samadhi,Bandhas and Mudras, Shad chakras and Nadis and Description of Yoga in Ayurveda. This will give the student a holistic view of yoga rather than mere asanas or postures.
Great textbooks like Yoga sutras of Patanjali, The Bhagavad Gita, Hath yoga Pradipika and Gheranda Samhita are quoted wherever necessary with explanations. Hence it is a good read for the post graduate students as well. With immense pleasure, I forward this book to all seekers of knowledge and hope they will be enlightened by going through the pages.
I also take this opportunity to wish the very best to the authors and hope they continue writing more such valuable publications in future too.
I had an opportunity to write this book on yoga with revised syllabus, which will be helpful for different yoga courses as Yoga for Certificate course and Diploma courses, B.SC.Yoga, M.Sc.Yoga as well as for students of Ayurveda. This book is written with an intention to satisfy the needs of graduate and post-graduate students of Ayurveda and Yoga.
The major aim of this book has been to analyze basic fundamentals of Yoga. Chapters included references from Patanjali's Yoga Sutra, Hatha Yoga Pradipika, Gherand Samhita, Shiv Samhita and other text also. This book contains theoretical knowledge of Yoga and brief description of Astangha Yoga, along with this, the clinical aspects of Yoga about Asana, Pranayama, Samadhi and Shatkarma procedures also. Asanas and Shatkarma processes were described very clearly in this book with original photographs as well as indicated clearly in different types of diseases. This book deals with the subject in all completeness and clarity covering all aspects of the fundamental principles of Yoga.
I am thankful to the authors of all books quoted as references in this book. It is hoped that this book will receive the attention of readers from different fields both basic and applied.
