In the field of Buddhist literature, one has to often consult Tibetan translations of Sanskrit texts and their Sanskrit originals while doing research, editing, translation, or compiling a dictionary, etc.. This no doubt, is a tiring job. Therefore, to save time and an unwarranted exertion, it was decided to prepare a Concordance of Tibetan and Sanskrit Texts.

While working on this project, we had two objectives before us:

1. To facilitate the search for the desired portion of a Sanskrit text in its corresponding Tibetan editions of Kagyur or Tangyur

2. To facilitate the search for the desired text of any edition of Kagyur or Tangyur in its corresponding Sanskrit text

After serious discussion with scholars, it was found that it is not possible to achieve these two objectives with a single concordance. For that, there is a need to prepare three different concordances, viz.

1 Concordance of Tibetan and Sanskrit Texts

2 Concordance of Kagyur and Tangyur Editions

3 Concordance of Editions of Sanskrit Texts

Accordingly, the first Concordance of Tibetan and Sanskrit Texts has been compiled. This Concordance includes 108 Tibetan translations found in the Derge edition of the Kagyur and Tangyur with their respective Sanskrit texts. Further, an attempt has been made to include the page numbers of both the Tibetan as well as the Sanskrit text, to show missing portions and change in then sequence of the chapters / sections of a text, if any. A description pertaining to any text includes the name of that text in Sanskrit and Tibetan with its Romanised form, volume number of the Tibetan text, its page numbers, name of the author and the translator, the serial number of the Tohoku Catalogue, the edition of the Sanskrit text used and the address of the publisher.

To achieve the above mentioned objectives, following method is adopted:

a. In the description of a poetical text, page numbers of the Tibetan text and verse numbers of the Sanskrit text are given. One can easily reach the desired portion of a Tibetan text found in any edition of the Kagyur and Tangyur by counting the verses occurring in the corresponding Sanskrit text. This technique can also be used to find out the desired portion of a Sanskrit text in the corresponding Tibetan text.

b. In order to find the desired portion of a Sanskrit prose text in any of the corresponding edition of the Kagyur and Tangyur or vice versa names of the chapters are also provided in this concordance. With the help of a chapter name, one can easily search the desired portion of a Sanskrit text in any of the corresponding Tibetan editions. The same technique may be used to find out the desired portion of a Tibetan text in its corresponding Sanskrit text. The procedure is as follows: the beginning and the end of a chapter should be found out. This should be followed by deciding the place of the desired portion as to either in the beginning, or in the middle or at the end of a chapter which would result in reaching the desired portion of a text.
