Book Description
Foreword
This book on Concept of Ayurveda for perfect Health and Longevity is a welcome addition to the existing treatises in English on the subject of Ayurveda It sees the light of the day when several systems of the world are groping in dark to leston healthy living and longevity to makind Health has been a primary concern of man since his existence on this earth He enjoyed health as a natural gift, until it was inpaired by diseases. He endeavoured to discover and devise methods and means to combat disease, when health was disturbed. He also thought of creating a healthy state of body and mind, so that pains of diseases could be avoided. The long and continuing battle of man to understand and study problems of health has been the genesis of all sciences of health and medical systems.

There have grown different systems based on different understanding of factors which are essential for healthy state and factors which are responsible for disease. The pursulf to scientifically understand the human body, its functions and reactions and responses and to study them from different approaches formed basis of almost all systems of the world.

The modem medical science known as allopathic system owes its origin to the concepts and philosophy developed by greek physician Hippoerate (460-377 BC), who is regarded the Father of Medicine According to Hippocrates four humours formed the constitution of human body organism. These were described as blood (senquis) phyegm (phlegma), yellow bile (choc) and black bile (melas chole) His basis of thinking was that disease was a result of improper combination of humours Arabian scholars developed such concepts and demonstrated them in their works translated in Arabic and also in original Arabic studies The unani system of medicine was also based on similar concepts, as understood by the sponsor of this system.

Ayurved is regarded as a filth Veda, that is an extension of four Vedas, which are the source of all knowledge. Vedas are Perhaps the most ancient repositary of all knowledge known to mankind One of the Vedas, known as Atharva Veda, has references to diseases and remedies, and later the entire science of Ayurveda ie the science of long and healthy life was given to mankind by visionaries and scholars Charaka, the Father of Indian Medicine has bestowed on mankind perhaps the best and the most profound science of health and disease Another great scholar is Sushruta, who was the pioneer of surgical science He was the man who gave rheno-plastic surgery centrules before the modern science came to know about it. The works of these ochlan and other classics were based on natural philesphy of man and his existence, his relationship with nature and environment and his physical phisiological functions in tune with nature's rysthm. The Panchmahabuta theory, which this author has described in its book has the philosophical and meta-physical foundation. Unlike, other systems, Ayurveda thus developed not a mere materialistic doctrinnaire but evloved a holistic approach leading) with body (sharir), organs (Indriyam), mind (Manas) and It is on this unimpeachable scientific foundation, according to the writer, that the science of Ayurveda is based.

Unlike four humours understood by modern system, Ayurveda believed in Tridosha theory (Three doshas). Three doshas are Vata, Pitta and Kapha, It is not easy to describe these concepts in modem terminology.

According to the author, just as all material creation can be classified as belonging predominatly to the Panchamahabhutas, the Doshas are also classified in this way. The author has done well to deal in the early chapters of his book with the basic principles of Ayurveda and the concept of disease, which is the result of imbalance of doshas Another concept which is essential to understand the basic approach of Ayurveda is Prakriti Flowing from these basic concepts, the authar had dealt with in logical sequence, concept of mind, concept of immunity, concept of longevity and how the Ritu charya and Dina charya Dircharya pattya ahar all go to make the entire science of Swasthavirta, which is the predominant branch of Ayurveda for perfect health and longevity.
