The present volume is the Descriptive Catalogue of Samokrit manuscripts preserved in the Library of the Ganganatha Jha Research Institute, Allahabad. The manuscripts section of the library was started in 1943 with barely a few hundreds of manuscripts belonging to the late Mahamahopadhyaya Dr. Sir Gangnatha Jha, K.C.S.I., M.A., D.Litt., and donated by his worthy sons to the Institute Sabsequently, through the untiring efforts of the Hon. Secretary of the Institute the number of manuscripts increased and by 1961 it was more than three. thousands. It was then contemplated to bring out a catalogue of these manuscripts for the benefit of scholars. Just at this time the scheme launched by the Ministry of Education, Government of India for the publication of catalogue of manuscripts in private institutions came in handy. The Institute took advantage of this scheme and was able to produce this volume. When about three thousand manuscripts were catalogued and the press copy of the catalogue was ready, a fresh collection of a large number of manuscripts was acquired with the financial assistance of the Government of India. It was then thought desirable to include as many manuscripts of this collection as possible in this volume. The press copy of the catalogue which was already prepared had therefore to be revised and rewritten. Hence, the inevitable delay in publishing this volume which is very much regretted.
This catalogue is prepared according to the plan suggested by the Government of India, giving the serial number of the manuscript, its accession number the title of the work, name of the author, name of the commentator, the substance, and the script of manuscript, its size, number of folios, number of lines per page, number of letters per line, extent of the work i.e. whether the work is complete or not, its condition and furnishing additional particulars wherever necessary. Extracts are given and additional information is furnished in Appendix A regarding certain works under serial numbers marked E. All the entries except extracts from manuscripts are made in Roman characters. Although for want of time and space extracts of only a few works are included in Appendix A there are other important works of which mention is made here under different heads of subjects.
