Preface The Arya Vaidya Sala, Kottakkal has been conducting Annual Ayurveda Seminars in connection with the Founder's Day Celebrations since 1964 and All India Essay Competitions since 1965. The proceedings of seminars and prize winning essays are being published regularly. They cover a wide range of topics and have become a veritable source of information to the students and researchers in the field of ayurveda. 'Diseases During Pregnancy & Various Aspects of its Management' was the topic for essay competition in 1990.

Introduction A mother is a member of the society with an intrinsic worth, and she occupies a certain status of both at home and in society. If there is one characteristic more desirable to be maintained in communal life, it is the dignity of motherhood. Biologically, motherhood is the woman's cherished desire and her ordained accomplishment but this apparently physical function goes far deeper and has a greater importance than the purely mechanised production of a child.
