The care of asthma is a team effort involving you and your physician. This book cannot and is not meant to replace your physician.

This book embodies the approach to the management of asthma at the Centre for Diabetes, Heart and Asthma Care. Different physicians may approach some aspects of asthma care is ways that differ from those in this book. While most teams are in close agreement regarding the GENERAL PRINICIPLES of asthma management, they may differ on the Details. There can be more than one "right" way to approach a specific issue in asthma management.

An estimated 15 million Indians suffer from asthma. Mostly a life-long problem that cannot be cured completely, however, the attacks can be prevented or controlled. For this, one must understand the causes, treatment options, lifestyle changes etc. doctors are reluctant to use steroids, fearing side effects. Inhalation therapy is also not used optimally. With over 20 years experience in treating asthma, the doctor couple cover all these aspects in their book.

Some patients are reluctant to use allopathy. Therefore, information on alternative therapies has been included. The book will help patients manage mild episodes at home and decided when to visit the doctor. By following instructions, patients can also prevent the onset of acute attacks. With this book, primary level doctors can diagnose and treat patients easily and also educate them on preventing attacks.

About the Author

Dr. Ashok Birbal Jain, an eminent physician of Wardha, graduated in medical sciences from Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences, Sewagram. He is in active practice since 1983 and has a nursing home with state-of-the-art equipments. Dr Aruna Jain his wife and an eminent pathologist of Wardha-graduated in medical Sciences from Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences, Sewagram. Dr. Aruna has a hi-tech pathology lab at Wardha.

The doctor couple have authored a book on Bronchial Asthma and another on Diabetes in Marathi. They have acquired deep knowledge in holistic sciences, especially Homeopathy, Yoga, Ayurveda and Reiki. They have conducted workshops on numerous topics at schools and colleges in Wardha, Nagpur, New Delhi and Pune. They manage the Centre for Diabetes, heart and Asthma Care and have organized many Continuing Medical Education programmes for doctors.
