The Asiatic Society, almost from the formative years of its classical research, has built up a tradition of Buddhist Studies. There has been a steady growth in this field since the initiative taken by Brian Houghton Hodgson during the early nineteenth century. The trend effectively and systematically continued later through the devotion of Dr. Rajendralala Mitra and Mm. Haraprasad Sastri, and many others at the Society.

Dr. Archana Ray has diligently compiled a comprehensive list of repositories of such studies and publications on the Buddhist literature and manuscripts available with the Asiatic Society. This will be of much help to the scholars for their future research work and ready references.

The founder of the Asiatic Society Sir William Jones mentioned that the objective vision of the Society was to investigate about Man and Nature within the periphery of the geographical limits of Asia. The inquiries were made in various subjects extending from literature, language, art, history, religion, culture, and science. Buddhist studies too received both individual and institutional attention. Present study put an effort to make a documentation of works on Buddhist studies covering literature, religion, history, culture, architecture and others, published between 1788 and 2018 in different periodicals and reports of the Asiatic Society, Calcutta (now Kolkata).
