In this and the next volumes, the third and the fourth in the series, the traditional approach has been illustrated Traditionally the study of Rgveda begins with the Pranava (Omkära) and proceeds with the vyährtis (Bhüh, Bhuvah and Suvah), the Gayatri Mantra, and Purusha Sükta. The Purusha Sükta is regarded as the epitome of the entire Vedic Cannon, and as having taken shape from the Gayatri Mantra. It is an elaboration of the Gayatri Mantra, even as the three pådas of the Gayatri Mantra have grown out of the Three Vyährtis and the Vyährtis themselves are claborations of the three constituent units of the Pranava (a, u and m). It is therefore that tradition insists that the study must follow this line of development.
