Brothers and creative partners, Dev Anand and Vijay Anand consistently brought out the best in each other. Hum Dono celebrates their artistic genius which brought us eight unforgettable films, from Nau Do Gyarah (1957) and Guide (1965) to Tere Mere Sapne (1971). These milestones in mainstream Indian cinema are not merely revisited but dissected to reveal the creative symbiosis between Dev and Goldie, as Vijay was affectionately called.

Tanuja Chaturvedi worked as Dev Anand's chief assistant. Through intimate conversations and first-hand experiences, she examines how the unique bond of Dev and Goldie as brothers and creative partners inspired some of their iconic works.

Hum Dono is essential reading for cinema enthusiasts and anyone who cherishes the golden era of Indian filmmaking.

GUIDE, DIRECTED BY VIJAY ANAND, was my first cinematic experience. When my father was posted to Delhi, our family moved there from Kota, Rajasthan. Soon, hordes of uncles, aunts and country cousins landed up for a 'Delhi darshan'. As the youngest, I was saddled with the responsibility of being their tour guide. The finale of their tour inevitably was the other Guide - a film which ran continuously for two years near my house in Daryaganj, at Golcha Cinema.

I must have seen the film at least a dozen times but was too small to figure out much of the story. However, S.D. Burman's voice in 'Wahaan Kaun Hai Tera' and 'Allah Megh De' got stuck in my head. This mysterious voice would lull me, soothe me and give wings to my imagination.

THIS BOOK IS THE fruition of a long journey. Warm thanks to my brother, Vipul Chaturvedi, for satiating my early childhood curiosity, encouraging me to read and expand my mind; and his friend Prem Sunder Jha for gifting me my first Parker pen at the age of fourteen, predicting that one day I will be a writer.

AMONG THE FINEST DIRECTOR-actor screen collaborations are Akira Kurosawa and Toshiro Mifune, Federico Fellini and Marcello Mastroianni, Wong Kar-wai and Tony Leung, to name a few. Right alongside them are Vijay Anand and Dev Anand. From the 1950s to the 1970s, they worked together to produce, direct and act in pathbreaking films from mainstream Hindi cinema.
