Mohini Gupta: An author in her own right, Mohini Gupta has constantly assisted her husband V.P. Gupta in his academic pursuits. Her studies of national leaders like Raja Ram Mohan Roy, Lokmanya Bal Gangadhar Tilak, Mahatma Gandhi, Sardar Vallabh Bhai Patel, Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose and B.R. Ambedkar both in English and Hindi have been well received in academic circles. In her two-volume study of Fifty Years of Indian Independence (Hindi), she has presented a penetrating analysis of major social and political develop- ments since independence. Her encyclopaedic work on the history and culture of Punjab is an oustanding contribution.
Lala Lajpat Rai was one of the architects of modern India. He was born in 1865 and passed away in 1928 at the age of sixty- three. he devoted almost whole his active life since his college days upto the end-about forty-five years-in the service of the motherland. He staked his all-career, family, wealth, health and even life-for the cause of his country. He was a rare phenomenon in Indian politics and Gandhiji rightly said about him: "Men like Lalaji cannot die so long as the sun shines in the Indian sky."
Lajpat Rai was a man of many parts-an orator, a social reformer, a writer, a nationalist, a parliamentarian, an educationist and above all a statesman who was sure to emerge as a leader of men in any age and in any country. He was a synthesis of action and contemplation. He was a realist and a visionary capable of responding to the contemporary challenges and also keeping with the unfolding drama of the distant future with a keen objectivity and a clear understanding of the emerging national and international scenario.
The present work The Life and Legacy of Lala Lajpat Rai is divided into five sections: (1) The Historical Setting; (2) Life and Times; (3) The Legacy; (4) Documents; and finally (5) Appendices. The book is a modest attempt to present a complete view of the multi- faceted life of Lala Lajpat Rai and his ever-lasting legacy to the country.
