This book is meant to highlight the newness in the teaching and yoga of Sri Aurobindo. A more general and more comprehensive presentation of Sri Aurobindo's teaching and yogic discipline will be found in The Integral Yoga: Sri Aurobindo's Teaching and Method of Practice, compiled by Sri Aurobindo Ashram's Archives and Research Library.
In this Introduction, the reader will find here and there numbers in parentheses. They refer to the number of the passage in the book in which the quoted words or the matter alluded to occurs.
There is an intimate relationship between Sri Aurobindo's philosophical and psychological teaching on the one hand and his yoga or spiritual discipline on the other. This relationship stands out particularly in the new elements of Sri Aurobindo's teaching and yoga.
The first three sections of the book - "An Integral View of Reality", "A New Concept of Evolution" and "An Integral Scheme of Psychology" deal with the new elements of Sri Aurobindo's philosophical and psychological teaching. The next two sections - "A New Aim of Yoga" and "An Integral Method of Sadhana" present the new aspects of Sri Aurobindo's yoga which will be seen to stem directly from the new elements of his teaching. The sixth section and Other Paths" -"The Integral Yoga is meant to distinguish the Integral Yoga from some of the main yogas of the past so as to underline more distinctly the newness in the Integral Yoga. In the last section- "Promise of a New World" - Sri Aurobindo heralds the next stage of evolution — the dawn of the supramental world as an inevitable necessity. In the Addendum, the Mother reveals her experience of the manifestation of the Supramental Consciousness as an accomplished fact.
