The present text of the Pratimoksasutra is based on a Photostat copy of a palm-leaf manuscript discovered by Mahapandita Rahula Sankrityayana in Tibet. The text was published some time back in the Ganganath Jha Research Institute Journal. But it could not be properly deciphered by the editords and so a fresh edition has been attempted here. Almost all the important Buddhist schools had their own Pratimoksasutra. A comparative study of the various Pratimoksasutras has been made by Dr. Pachaw and his book has been published by the Sino-Indian Cultural Society, Santiniketan.
The Origin of the rules contained in the Pratimoksasutras belongs to the beginnings of the Buddhist Sangha. Originally the rules were a few, But with the development of the Sangha, rules were multiplied in number in accordance with the needs of maintaining discipline and unity of the Sangha.
