Book Description
About The Book

There is no greater fruit in the world, than the fruit of the Himalayas popularity known as ‘Rudraksha’. There are very few books available on this topic in English and Indian languages. With the material available in Sanskrit and other languages, a humble attempt is made to combine the scriptural knowledge with my personal experience, gathered from many users throughout the globe.

The sages of Himalayas have adorned rudraksha to keep fit in cold weather and reached Nirvan (Moksha) through their tapas. Today almost all spiritual seekers, sadhus, mahatmas, politicians, house-holders wear rudraksha mala or at least a single rudraksha bead, not as a fashionable jewel, but as a protection from all negativities and pollution that creep into the mind. One may have to read this book very carefully, reverentially and repeatedly to find the exact solution to the problems that he/she is facing.

I would offer to talk to individuals, although in a very casual manner, on the benefits of wearing rudraksha. In the year 1994, I accompanied a group of NRIs on the Chardham yatra of Himalayas (Badri, Kedar, Gangotri and Yamotri), where I delivered my first talk on rudraksha at Kedarnath. This set the ball rolling. Well-wishers who had accompanied me there were impressed with my presentation. I was then inspired to make slides and write a small booklet for the convenience of people by Dharmoo Khushalani. This booklet has been translated in nine Indian languages. My talks and slides shows to are well received. I have made several trips to the Himalayas in India and Nepal to see the actual cultivation of rudraksha and the industrial process by which this bead is made available in the market for the buyers.

For sometimes now, I had a pressing urge to write a coffee-table book on rudraksha. The urge would have remained dormant without the persuasion of my wife, Dr. Sati who pushed me to pen this book. I would be failing in my duty if I do not thank her. I cannot forget the services offered by Mr. Joesph who patiently keyed in the whole script on the computer.

My thanks to Brni. Vividisa, the Chief Editor of Balvihar, the children’s magazine of Chinmaya Mission, who spent valuable hours editing the script. My pranams to Pujya Gurudev Swami Chinmayanandaji, whose grace has made possible this book. Finally, I thank Swami Tejomayanandaji, the Head of Chinmaya Mission world-wide, who has blessed me for the success of this book and for my over-all well-being.

I hope and pray that many are healed and helped by this ministering bead.

Foreword

This book is based on the mahima (glory) of rudraksha sung by the rishis of yore in Vedic scriptures. For more than a decade, Shri Narain Bhatia, the author, has put in lot of efforts to observe, record and confirm the effects of the bead on the users from different walks of the life, viz doctors, businessmen, educationists, industrialists, etc. They all have benefited from his advice. To his pleasant surprise, many reported that their belief turned to truth, when they followed his instructions and used the bead accordingly. Thus the author sums it all up saying “ It is a matter of faith”.

Faith is a journey from the known to the unknown, beyond the purview of logic and reason. The beej mantras are shakti mantras, which when chanted properly invoke the respective devata and through His/Her grace, the devotee’s wishes are fulfilled.

May the blessings of the Almighty and Pujya Gurudev Swami Chinmayanandaji, be with Shri Bhatia to unearth more hidden secrets about the rudraksha and may many find their lucky charm in this mystical bead.

Introduction

Indian mythology splits rudraksha as ‘rudra’ + ‘aksha’, which literally means ‘the eyes of Rudra’ i.e., Lord Shiva. Shiva is known for his meditative flights. It is believed that He once mediated for a long time for the Welfare of mankind. When he finally opened his eyes, the joy, the peace and upsurge of love that He felt for the entire mankind, expressed in the forms of tears. Precious tears they were, that streamed down his cheeks and reached the earth, in the crystallized form of beads. Since they are the beads born of the tears of the Lord Almighty Himself, they are considered very holy and healing in their effect on the wearer.

Botanically the rudraksha is known as Elaecarpus Ganitrus Roxb. The trees are cradled in the lap on Himalayas in India and Nepal and also in Surabaya in Java, Indonesia. They are huge, wide-spreading trees whose flowers bloom annually.

The rudraksha bead, about the size of a berry, (varying from 3mm to 40mm) is enclosed within the pulp, covered by the a smooth green skin. It drops down on the earth on ripening. In a couple of days, the skin turns hard and black.

The beads are gathered and immersed in hot water for a couple of hours to make the skin and the pulp soft. Both the skin and pulp are use as ingredients for Ayurvedic medicines. What then remains is the bead, having an aperture in the centre and vertical lines running through it, forming a ‘mukha’ (face) or mukhas, as the case may be. These are natural formations on the bead. The bead having a single vertical line or mukha is called ‘ek-mukhi’ Mukhas vary from one to twenty-one.

The holy scriptures like Shiva Purana, Padma Purana, Devi Purana, Rudrajabalopanished and Mantramaharnava sing the glories of rudraksha. They describes the hidden, divine qualities of this bead.

It is worn and worshipped by all, irrespective of religion, caste creed, color and sex. A Brahmin pandit can wear rudraksha while performing pujas. So also the soldier while waging a war. The share-broker can wear it for better luck in the stock markets and so too the students for better communication.

Rudraksha has a calming effect on the central nervous system. Incidentally, if you see the structure of the ‘ek-mukhi’, you will notice its similarly to the human brain. Rudraksha helps the wearers to maintain their health. It confers peace and prosperity on the wearer. It has no adverse effects whatsoever. It has been emphatically proclaimed that if an individual meets death with the bead on his person, then he is released from the vicious cycle of birth and death. It blesses one with Nirvana (Moksha). It is a ‘gem of bead’.

One who wears rudraksha feels the presence of Lord Shiva and this feeling rids the mind of negative thoughts.
