About the Book

The The Vittamalastuti or "Praise in the Form of a Garland of Metres Counted by Syllables" is a unique piece of literature composed by Jñānaśrīmitra, who taught Buddhist philosophy and other subjects at the university of Vikramasila in the first half of the 11th century. This work illustrates 150 metres in the form of a hymn, as indicated by its title. The addressee is the Bodhisattva Mañjuśrī. With great ingenuity Jñānaśrīmitra manages to include the name of each metre in the respective stanza in such a manner that it becomes a natural part of the praise of Manjuśrī. Some of the names of the metres have no independent meaning. The author therefore uses various devices so that those words with acquired meanings can fit in the praise of Mañjuśrī. The commentary (Vivṛti) is a most welcome aid for under- standing the intricacies of Jñānaśrīmitra's composition. It evinces Śākyarakşita's profound scholarship and versatile knowledge. Working on these two texts for past several years, Prof. Michael Hahn published the first edition of the texts from Japan. The present revised edition is the first Indian edition in Devanagari based on that edition. Reading this book itself will be a refreshingly new experience for enthusiastic readers.

About the Author

Prof. Michael Hahn (1941-2014) taught Indian and Tibetan studies at the Universities of Hamburg (1968-1972), Bonn (1972-1988), and Marburg (1988-2007), where he fostered a number of students and contributed numerous books and articles. He specialized in classical Sanskrit Literature, particularly in the poetic and didactic literature of Indian and Tibetan Buddhism. For his doctoral dissertation, he worked on the Tibetan translation of the Vrttamālāstuti and continued to work on that text till his last days. Among his important publications are Candragomin's Lokānandanățaka, Haribhatta and Gopadatta, Der große Legendenkrans, Poetical Visions of the Buddha's Former Lives: Seventeen Legends from Haribhatta's Jätakamālā, and Kapphiņābhyudaya of Śivasvāmin.

Preface

We are extremely delighted to offer a critical edition of Jñānaśrīmitra's Vrttamälästuti with Śākyarakşita's Vivrti to the scholarly world. During our visits to Marburg from 2012 to 2014, we got the rare opportunity to read these texts along with the Tibetan translation of the root-text with Prof. Michael Hahn. In these intensive reading sessions, we learned from him a number of things regarding text editing and the methodology of Tibetan translation. His great insight into classical Sanskrit and Tibetan was amazing and educating at the same time. It was indeed a thrilling experience to read the manuscript with him, to go through his diplomatic edition, to fill up the lacunae in the text, and to discuss various issues related to Sanskrit grammar and prosody. While going through this material, Prof. Hahn realized that there was still some scope to revise the text he had established earlier. This resulted into the first semi-critical edition of the text and its commentary in the Roman script. It was published in the form of two articles in a journal from Japan, South Asian Classical Studies (SACS), no. 8, and 9, in 2013 and 2014 respectively. Before the publication of the second part, Prof. Hahn felt that we should write a separate article discussing the grammatical explanations in the comme- ntary, for the benefit of those readers who are not much familiar with the grammatical technicalities. The same was also published in the SACS, no. 9. Despite his deteriorating health, Prof. Hahn took pains to meticulously work with us on the text, giving a patient hearing to our comments, appreciating good suggestions on our part, and flatly rejecting the un- acceptable ones. It was the first ever experience for us to have the guidance of that Guru who was always ready to help his students and his colleagues to the extent possible.
