Although born in a family of devout Hindus, the author's spiritual journey actually started only in 1988, when he began to regularly chant ""Hare Krishna Hare Krishna Krishna Krishna Hare Hare Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare. One thing led to another, and he started to get attracted to the Bhagavad- Geeta for spiritual knowledge. Having studied the basics of the Sanskrit grammar in his school days, there was some affinity towards the verses of this book of eternal wisdom, but its nuances were beyond him. Still he pursued and memorized all its verses as an intellectual exercise.
Not satisfied with this, he began to learn Sanskrit grammar in the right earnest. Seeing the strong desire, divine forces arranged a meeting with a Sanskrit scholar who became a very close friend. Thus started a journey to understand each word of the various verses of the Bhagavad-Geeta, their grammatical forms and their true meanings. The result was an edition of the Bhagavad-Geeta probably never done in this form earlier.
This exercise revealed the true purport of the Bhagavad- Geeta and was so inspiring that the author began to write spiritual articles based on this newly acquired knowledge. Still, there was plenty of gap between his realizations and his knowledge. Over a period of time, the merciful Lord took care of this problem also, many changes took place in the nature of the author. The journey which had started in 1988 now began to gather a little speed, and the author began to enjoy the spiritual experience.
This is the first part of a series of books on spiritual matters. For this part, I have chosen six topics which are at the core of wisdom.
GOD - Everyone will agree that minus God there is no spirituality. We know that God encompasses everything, but not everyone realizes it. When we are not God-centered, we get lost. God is our beginning, middle and the end also. (The Bhagavad-Geeta 10.20) Therefore, it is wise never to lose sight of God, no matter what we do.
INTELLIGENCE - This sets us apart from other species. Shouldn't we know more about what constitutes intelligence, real intelligence? One may falsely assume that having some knowledge is intelligence; it is much more than that.
PLEASURES/ENJOYMENT/BLISS Life sans pleasures is unthinkable. These motivate us. However, there are different levels of pleasures. They are in the three modes of goodness, passion and darkness. The topmost level is of transcendental pleasures. There are pleasures of senses, mind, intelligence and soul. We need all these. Pleasures are also internal and external. Sense pleasures are external, while pleasures of the mind, intelligence and soul are internal. Good knowledge of the types of pleasures available and their proper assessment helps us to make our lives pleasurable.
We are looking for peace of mind and happiness. No one lives to be miserable. Bliss is advanced stage of happiness, And this is achieved when one has realized one's identity as a pure soul and established a solid connection with God the repository of bliss. Both these tasks appear more difficult than they actually are. Spiritual practices such as meditation, chanting and studying of spiritual texts bring us both soul and God realization. This happens gradually and automatically if we are regular in our spiritual practices.
