It is said in the first chapter of the Mahabharata, that the author Vyasa, who has just mentally composed a vast poem, is in quest for a scribe who can record it. He informs Lord Brahma of his problem, who suggests that he request Ganesha to write the epic.

Vyasa meditates upon Ganesha, who appears before him. After showing him deep respect, the great sage holds out a seat, inviting him to sit there. Vyasa asks Ganesha to be the scribe of the great epic which he has just composed.

Ganesha accepts, provided that the movement of his stylus on the palm leaves not be interrupted even once.

Vyasa in his turn asks him not to record anything before understanding it perfectly.

After having placed the sacred syllable OM on the top of his manuscript, Ganesha writes the Mahabharata. the largest epic the world has ever known.
