Devi Lalita, Sachamara Rama-Vani Savya-Dakshina Sevita

Devi Lalita, Sachamara Rama-Vani Savya-Dakshina Sevita

$1995

The thousand names of Devi Lalita each express an aspect of the divine. Indubitable as they are, they are replicated in paintings and sculptures produced in India to this day. The picture of the Devi that you see on this page befits the “sachamara Rama-Vani savya-dakshina sevita” aspect.

Lakshmi (‘Rama’) and Sarasvati (‘Vani’) stand in either direction of the seated Tripurasundari - another name of the Devi - to the right (‘dakshina’) and the left (‘savya’), respectively. The word ‘sachamara’ conveys that they are possessed of (‘sa’) the ritual fan (‘chamara’). Note how they are fashioned from brilliantly coloured peacock plumage, glistening as they motion over the Devi who is waited upon (‘sevita’).

Beneath Her, the twilight-coloured Lord Shiva looks upon His beauteous wife with all the love and ardour of a husband. Surrounding the foot of Her throne are twin figures of Brahma and Vishnu. Further down is the Shri Yantra flanked by Lord Ganesha and Lord Skanda. This particularly auspicious iconography of Devi Rajarajeshvari will occupy pride of place in the home of the truly devoted.
