Outlined by a solid black and vermillion, this watercolor painting fills the ambiance with a divine Bhakti-bhava (emotion of devotion). The subject for the artwork is a youthful maiden, dressed in ochre, the color of ascetics, performing the Abhishekam of a Shiva Linga. The ritual worship takes place on the banks of a lotus-filled lake, besides a black mound that serves as a perfect backdrop for highlighting the loveliness of the Bhaktin. Though bestowed with all the qualities of a Sundari, the most appealing virtue of the devotee is her single-minded focus on her Lord, whom she has adorned with floral offerings of lotus and Dhatura flower and Tilaka of sandalwood paste. Infusing the environs with heavenliness, the devotion of the Bhaktin is manifested as a crane bird in the foreground, which in Hindu culture stands for an unwavering devoutness to a goal.
