A gorgeous Thanjavur painting of Hinduism’s first family. Shivaparivar (‘parivar’ is Sanskrt for family) comprises Lord Shiva, Devi Parvati, and their two sons, Lord Kartikeya and Lord Ganesha. In the Thanjavur painting that you see on this page, the divine parents are seated next to each other on a throne with a son on each lap.

The dusky-complexioned Lord is clad in a yellow-coloured dhoti. It contrasts sharply with the scarlet saree of His wife. Kartikeya is on Shiva’s lap, while Ganesha is on Parvati’s. Interestingly, in this Tanjore painting composition, Shiva and Ganesha are chaturbhujadhari, while Parvati and Kartikeya are dvibhujadhari.

The signature aspect of Tanjore art, gold leaf embellishment, is to be found across the canvas. Besides the adornments, there is gessowork on Shiva’s crown and trishoola as well as the snake wound around His neck. More on Parvati’s halo and the temple entrance structure on the upper corners of the painting. Finally, the multi-dia lamp and the plate of offerings at the feet of the deities.
