Kali and Durga are very close manifestations of Parvati, the wife of Shiva. They are both wrathful and take after the all-annihilating aspect of their husband. Kali, of course, has the darker complexion of the two, which earns Her the epithet.

As such, the Kali that you see on this page, by virtue of being carved from the naturally jet black Kadappa stone, is a beautifully accurate iconography. She is the ashtabhujadharini and is seated in lalitasana, with a wrathful demi-deity at Her feet.

This may be a relatively calm portrayal of Kali. This is despite the skullcup and the severed head, in addition to all the weaponry. The limestone medium allows for considerable detailing of anatomy and adornment, bringing out the personal beauty of Devi Kali.
