Forward

Most people are aware that the Ghazal is the most well-known and popular genre of Urdu poetry. The mass popularity of Ghazals is really due to their musical renditions. These renditions can broadly be classified into two streams. For the sake of simplicity, I will call them classical and Filmi: -

1. Classical ghazals are those which have been set to music and rendered by popular singers like Mehdi Hasan, Ghulam Ali, Jagjit Singh, Abida Parveen, Farida Khanum etc. However, this type is still somewhat limited to serious ghazal fans.

2. Filmi ghazals, as the name suggests, are those ghazals which have been used in Indian Films. Bollywood, especially in the 1950-1970 era, and even after that to a lesser degree, has made extensive use of Urdu poetry, both ghazals and geets, in its songs, These songs are evergreen hits, and most people love them and remember them even until today.

In my earlier book Golden Verses Golden Voices, I have selected my favourite sung ghazals and presented them along with their transcreations and with QR codes to help readers understand better and to enjoy fully their musical renditions.

This book is a selection of my favourite ghazals from Indian Films ranging from 1945 to 1999. Here also I have transcreated the ghazals and given QR codes to link each one to its Youtube clip to make the experience doubly enjoyable.
