About the Book: Diet and nutrition is an important part of health-care, at times much more than medicine and treatment, and in the present-day extremely health-conscious society, an authoritative book on the subject is most welcome. Though this work by an expert is aimed at the student of Dietetics, it is equally useful for the general reader because it is neither very elementary nor painfully technical, maintaining a balance between the two. In it the basic dietetic information is suitably documented and the scientific as well as practical aspects are commendably integrated.
Students and professionals of Home Science, Dietetics, Nutrition, Nursing and Medical or Para-medical courses, will find the book most useful; it covers all the diseases in quite some detail and food-planning needed in their treatment.
A leading authority on nutrition and holistic therapies with a Ph.D. in Food Science and Nutrition, Dr. (Mrs.) Jyoti Singh, is presently attached with Government Home Science College, Chandigarh. She has been writing various articles in nutrition for Hindustan Times and Times of India. Her articles have appeared in many renowned journals like Journal of Research, SKUAST-J, Himachal Journal of Agricultural Research, Beverage and Food World, and Journal of Dairying, Foods & Home Sciences to name a few. Adding to her credit is the research on soybean and Dr. Jyoti has been successful in bringing out several important features of soybean paneer (Tofu) into the limelight. Being a bright student right through her academic phase, she has won various scholarships for her B.Sc., M.Sc. and Ph.D. She also has two gold medals to her credit. Dr. Jyoti had a major breakthrough in her research when she worked on food consumption behaviour and nutrient adequacy of army personnel in selected cantonment areas.
This book has been written as a text for courses on food science, nutrition, dietetics, nursing, students of home science, agriculture, hotel management and practicing dieticians. Health conscious people can gain an insight into nutrition and dietetics, which plays an important role in our daily life. This book illustrates the general principles of nutrition and diet therapy, which are involved in diet planning.
If the students and other readers could find this book interesting and helpful then I would consider my efforts to have been awarded. I am very happy to note that Dr. Jyoti Singh has brought out this publication entitled "Handbook of Nutrition and Dietetics". It fills the gap between elementary books containing little scientific explanation and advanced books which examine the subject in detail but are only suitable for those who have a comprehensive scientific training.
In this book an attempt has been made to convey basic scientific factors and principles necessary for the understanding of basic and therapeutic nutrition.
This book will be an asset for the students of Home Science, Nutrition, Dietetics, Nursing and Medical/Paramedical courses, as it presents the latest knowledge along with practical approach in dealing with different disease conditions.
I congratulate Dr. Jyoti Singh for having done a splendid service to the student community.
