Dr. Pashupatinath Shastri, M.A., B.L., Ph.D. (Calcutta), Vidyasudhakara, Lecturer in Veda and Mimamsa, Calcutta University. (1915-28)
The present work is a doctorate thesis of the University of Calcutta first published in 1923 by the author himself. It was the first thesis sub-mitted by a member of the Sanskrit Department of the University of Calcutta. The award came in 1924. Due to its complexity and its depth, the study of Purvamimamsa without which an acquaintance with the Vedic lore is never possible, has inspired only a few scholars to undertake a pioneer work in the field, viz., Mahamahopadhyaya Ganganath Jha, and Mahamahopa-dhyaya Kuppusvami Shastri among the Indian scholars and Professor A. B. Keith among the foreign scholars. Inspired by the writings of these eminent scholars, Dr. Pashupathinath Shastri has made a substantial contribution to the solution of the important problems discussed in the works of Kumarila Bhatta and Prabhakara. Professor Shastri was not fortunate enough to have an acquaintance with some of the important treatises on the subject some of which were only available in manuscripts in his time and printed and published long after his death.
It is interesting to note the scholar's deep insight into the cardinal points of Mimamsa philosophy and his searching criticism of the views of his predecessors in the field. The matter of his treament leaves the impression that his critical acumen and power of presentation are almost extra-ordinary.
