We hear the buzz words chemistry, electricity, seduction, sparks and for each of us, these words conjure images. But do the words really describe the essence of a great romance? Do the words explain pairings such as Bogey and Bacall? Burton and Taylor? Hammett and Hellman? Zelda and F. Scott? Cruise and Kidman? These romances, splashed across the media to become the fodder of the tabloids, the stuff of cinematic and literary history, were born in the morass of human complexities and passionate ambitions and needs. But were all these couples soul mates?
What, exactly is a soul mate? Is it simply another person who is our ideal? Is it someone with whom we're compatible? Someone we've known in other lives? Does each of us have more than one soul mate?
Regardless of how we define what a soul mate is, one thing is certain: You will recognize the person. It may not be a conscious recognition, the kind of thing where you run over to your best friend's house, screaming that you've met your soul mate. But you'll feel it, some deep inner resonance that goes well beyond sparks and chemistry. You may not be able to explain it to anyone else, you may not even be able to explain it to yourself. But at some level, you'll know.
