Textual History Tool & Computational Phylogenetics For Sanskrit with Special Reference to Classical Indian Texts

In this book, we discuss in detail our efforts in building this "Textual History Tool' (प्रन्थेतिहास दर्शक यन्त्रम्). We design and implement this tool with the vision of helping philologists digitize the data, primarily variant manuscripts of a text and prepare a critical edition. The tool allows a philologist to not only add, edit, and delete manuscripts in a database, but also allows for a more fine-grained structure to be built for any manuscript of a text. We propose the use of what we call "functional units' of a text, which can help the task of phylogenetic tree creation via a more accurate comparison among manuscript variants which help a computational algorithm perform manuscript comparison in a granular manner. Our work provides a detailed analysis of this tool based on the manuscript data from a commentary on Paninian grammar known as the Kāšikävṛtti (KV).

Diptesh Kanojia- At present, he is Lecturer at Surrey Institute for People-Centred AI and Department of Computer Science, University of Surrey, UK. He earned his Ph.D. from the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, IIT Bombay in 2021 under the supervision of Professor Pushpak Bhatacharyya and Professor Malhar Kulkarni.

Malhar Kulkarni- At present, he is 'Sumati and Atmaram Kotwal Sanskrit Acharya Chair' Professor at the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences, IIT Bombay. He teaches Paninian grammar and composes original Sanskrit works such as (3) śabdasutra.

Deccan College Post-Graduate and Research Institute (Deemed to be University) celebrated its bicentenary on the 6 October 2021. The Publications Committee of the Bicentenary Celebrations had taken a decision to publish about 20 monographs to mark the completion of two hundred years of its existence. Experts were invited from the disciplines of the three departments of the Institute- Ancient Indian History, Culture and Archaeology. Linguistics and Sanskrit Lexicography as well as from Library Science. The quality and range of the areas covered in these publications is reassuring about the continuing research in these areas at the Institute known for its rich and invaluable contributions. The manuscripts from external experts show the trust and faith they have reposed in the intellectual commitment of the university. We are able to put in your hands 14 of the proposed 20 volumes, chosen on grounds of critical peer reviews. I can say in full faith that these monographs reflect the signs of progress and growth of the Institute, and that they convey not only the content, but also the abiding interest of the Institute in the unmixed pursuit of knowledge.
