About the Artiste

Born in 1911 into a family of musicians Pt. Pannalal Ghosh took to the flute very early in life. He also learnt to play the sitar from his father Akshay kumar Ghosh. The Bansuri as is known to us today owes its genesis to Panna Babu. His attempts at modifying it resulted in the bansuri incorporating a wider octave range with an echanced tonal quality. In 1936 he toured Europe as a music director of the Seraikella Dance Troupe. He zeal and passion drew him to the legendary Acharya Baba Allauddin Khan of the Maihar Gharana, who greatly influenced Panna Babu’s music. Besides rendering traditional ragas the genius in him found expression in creation of certain ragas some of which have been incorporated in this album. His creative spark also touched the music of the Hindi films such as Basant Andolan and Police wherein he composed music for the memorable songs. His untimely demise at the age of 48 was a great loss to the Indian music world.
