The glories of Gopala, Krishna as the protector of cows have been emotively narrated in the Bhakti poetry of India, the tunes of whose Murli attracts not only the Gopis but the Gau-vrinda (cow-herd) of Brija, who are bound by the strings of Kanha’s Prema. This watercolor painting represents the deep, spiritual bond between Murli-Manohara and his Gau-matas, who appear to be flocking to him from all four directions, attracted by the sweet melody of his Murli. The artist has used different shades for the cows, adding a variety of hues to the canvas. All of them are adorned with the Mora-pankha (peacock feather), symbolic of their relation with Mora-mukut-dhari Krishna. In a profound visual narration, the center of this gathering is the flute of Krishna, held in his hands, underlining the sole source of the nectar that fills the ambiance. Krishna himself, as the Shyama (dark) tone of the backdrop, pervades the entirety of the artwork.
