The medium of oil was considered foreign but the sensibility of the painter, as expressed in the selection of the theme and its treatment is unmistakably Indian. He strives to make canonic deities more contemporary, humanizing them without depriving them of dignity and magnificence.

Saraswati is popular not only amongst Hindus but Buddhists and Jains also. She is the tutelary deity of writers, artists and poets and embodies the spirit of all fine arts. Fair complexioned, she is dressed in a red blouse and a beige saree. The use of the saree endows the female figure with heroic and sublime propensity and of course, widens the appeal of the picture. Sitting with her right leg over the left knee, she has four arms with two occupied playing the veena and the other two holding a rosary and a manuscript each. There is a divine glow on her face - what if the artist has done away with the halo! She looks sideways with a puckered smile on her lips. Her crown is simple, as is her jewellery - reflecting that ostentation and wisdom do not necessarily go hand in hand.

The extensive landscape includes dense flowering shrubs behind the goddess, the calm blue skies, a river flowing with unusual tranquility and colourful flowers at her feet. Not to be ignored is the peacock in the foreground with colourful majestic feathers. Either the peacock or the swan are the birds associated with Saraswati.
