Royal portraits, events and life related to them were a popular theme with the artists. A lady poses in all her splendor, finery and ornaments, presenting a perfect picture. The details are carefully worked out, especially the many nuances of the body complexions. She does not gaze at the viewer but maintains a three-quarter profile. She rests one hand on a cushion and holds the pipe of a 'hookah' in the other. Grace is evident in the manner in which she places her lower limbs, resting one foot on the mat. That she enjoys a taste in music is evident from the gramophone in the background. The artist paints heavy drapery on the right. The sky is heavy, dark grayish-blue, with the moon shining through the tree housing a couple of night birds.
Various patterns are visible in the painting from the carpet to the bed, bed-cover, clothes, drapery etc. So much so, that the viewers eye fails to appreciate the finer nuances as it wanders to the unnecessary cluttering in the painting.
