Manjushri is known as the bodhisattva of wisdom. His most iconic attribute is his flaming sword, which he is said to wield to cut through ignorance, duality, and delusion then shed light through the darkness brought by worldly knowledge. This flame is also said to hold a transformative power to destroy ignorance and transform it into wisdom.

In this thangka, he is depicted with golden skin, also a sign of his enlightenment. Meanwhile, his left hand holds a stem of a lotus close to this chest. Zoom in on the lotus a scroll rests on top of it. This scroll is the Prajnaparamita sutra containing the perfection of wisdom. He is depicted as a young man, seating cross-legged on a lotus throne, and dressed in princely garb and accessories. All the deities are also seated on a lotus, which represents the purity of the lotus, which can thrive and remain unstained even on muddy waters. The backdrop of the thangka features repetitive patterns further highlighted Manjushri’s form and the other deities surrounding him. At the top left is the White Tara and on the top right is the Green Tara which both represent unending compassion (day and night). At the top center is Amitabha, Buddha of Eternal Light, in dhyana mudra. At the lower left is Avalokiteshvara, the Buddha of compassion. And lastly, at the lower right is Yama, the god of death, holding a danda (stick) and a noose.
