Neo-classical Sanskrit poetry influenced tradition and art in equal measure. Oil based colours on canvas are used to portray it to the best advantage.

In depicting a scene from 'Shakuntala', the artist prefers the broad hipped, full blossomed figures to narrate the tale. Shakuntala, daughter of a rishi, awaits her beloved Dushyanta, who promised to return and marry her. Pining for him, she asks her 'sakhis' to write to him, telling him about Shakuntala's woes. The friends write on the lotus leaf with a stem, all that she pours from the heart.

The women are broad, modeled on the lines of Ajanta beauties. The artist has rendered the faces and the bodies, colours and scenes with lyricism and expressive eloquence, required of the classic themes. Since the background is dense foliage, it is painted in various shades of green. Despite the density, the sunlight manages to peep from the upper right side. The artist sticks to the toned down shades all through, maintaining chromatic synchrony. He seems to handle oil paints with a transparency, fluency, softness and thinness usually associated with water colours.
