Preface to Third Edition

Swami Vivekananda's name is becoming more and more popular across the globe. However, even today many know very little about him. Some understand and adore him, some others misunderstand and misrepresent him. Who was he really? What did he do? What were his ideas and contribution to the welfare of the individual and the collective, of India and the rest of the world? The answers to these questions are what this book provides in a nutshell.

Swami Tapasyananda, who was a scholar-monk and one of the vice-presidents of the Ramakrishna Order and the author of this book, had rendered a vivid biographical sketch of Swami Vivekananda and a scholarly analysis of the legacy he left behind.

Considering the importance of this book, we are happy to bring out this new edition with a new wrapper design and a modified layout, supplemented with an index.

We have recast the text with appropriate font style and size, breaking long passages into smaller ones, and highlighting the quotations distinctly for easy reading. Taking meticulous care to retain the style and import of the author's original work, we have affected only minor changes in the text at some places for better comprehension.

We have embellished the book with some photographs of Swamiji and persons or places associated with him.

We are deeply indebted to Mr William Page whose diligent proofreading and critical review have helped us in shaping the book to this present form.

We are also grateful to Sri K. S. Subramanian, Ms Raajitha, and Smt. Sorna Durairaj for helping us in the proofreading.

May the blessings of Sri Ramakrishna, Holy Mother Sri Sarada Devi and Swami Vivekananda be on all those who prepared this edition and on those who read and derive inspiration from it.
